Coronavirus: South Africa crosses 100,000 Covid-19 threshold

South Africa has passed the 100,000 mark of coronavirus, with a death toll now close to 2,000, authorities said on Monday. The country accounts for more than half of the coronavirus infections recorded in sub-Saharan Africa.

" To date, the cumulative number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 has passed the 100,000 mark and stands at 101,590, " the health ministry said in a statement. With 61 new deaths in the past 24 hours, the total number of deaths from the new coronavirus is 1,991.
Cape Town, most affected region
Despite this severe toll, the death rate from the virus in South Africa stands at 2%, and 52.6% of those infected have recovered from Covid-19.
The region of the country most affected by the pandemic is the western province of Cape Town, where 1,458 of the approximately 2,000 deaths registered in the country and more than half of those infected originate.
According to WHO statistics, South Africa accounts for more than half of the coronavirus infections recorded in sub-Saharan Africa, followed closely by Nigeria and Ghana (with 20,000 and 14,000 cases of contamination respectively).
