The frugal midsummer farmer will invest in fresh potatoes and ship the strawberries this year.

The price of fresh berries has risen by 23.5 per cent in May compared to the same period last year. The price tag for caviar has also increased significantly - by 13.9 percent.

- There are both coronary-related and weather-related explanations that it is relatively expensive this year, but it is not unique. The price of food goes up and down, says Marcus Widen, who compiled the index.

According to Marcus Widen, the large price increase on berries is due, among other things, to spring being cold and frosty, which has been hard for the Scanian strawberries.

"The corona pandemic has affected imports and access to seasonal workers," he says.

Midsummer stores for 900 million

The only cheaper item this year is potato in bulk, whose price has fallen by 6.4 percent. Ice cream, herring and sour cream are among the products that have the lowest price increases, according to the compilation.

- The potatoes have become cheaper as last year's harvests hit the summer drought in 2018, says Marcus Widen.

Svensk Handel estimates that food sales will increase by just over SEK 900 million during the midsummer week. Despite the corona crisis, the midsummer trade is expected to go strong again this year as more "home esters" instead of traveling abroad, the business organization writes.
