A police officer will appear in court Tuesday, June 23 in Strasbourg for violence by a person holding public authority. He is accused of having injured with a baton a demonstrator "yellow vest" in January 2019, confirming information from DNA . The demonstration took place in Strasbourg and ended in clashes with the police.

The demonstrator, 62 years old, received "eleven stitches in the back of the skull and was not armed", she only wore "glasses and a mask to protect herself", advanced her lawyer Me Renaud Bettcher .

"Not directly threatened"

According to the report of the IGPN Metz delegation, the peacekeeper, identified as being the author of the baton strike, "was not threatened directly or personally by a protester or by the victim" during the demonstration.

"If the use of public force was absolutely necessary for the maintenance or the restoration of public order (…), it appeared however that the blow struck on the back of the skull of [the demonstrator] could not be justified" , concluded the IGPN, while the police described this as "an error".
