The inventory is carried out to examine the population and fish development over time. In 2019, the county councils in Halland, Skåne and Västra Götaland raised alarms about a drastic reduction of the species - this after the 2019 inventories only showed the presence of sea-neon eyes in four of the country's watercourses. In Halland it was observed in Kungsbackaån and Ätran. The species has thus gone from the red list status "Near threatened" in 2015 to "Strongly threatened" 2020 at the Art Databank.

- By inventing and looking at the species' play pattern and development, one can press on the measures needed to make the species survive. It can be about creating free walking paths in the waterways so that they reach their play areas. Then more large fish are needed in the sea that the neonate can parasitize on. If the sea is depleted, it cannot survive, says Elisabeth Thysell, nature conservation officer at the County Administrative Board in Halland.
