The media team of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding held a symposium titled "Reading in the Experience of the Winners of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding through its past five seasons," Thursday evening, in which a number of winners participated.

The first intervention in the symposium, which was organized via the "Zoom" application and broadcasted directly via "Facebook", was presented by the Jordanian doctor, Ikhlas Al-Qanawah, who won first place in the 2019 edition of her translation of the book "Science in a Manifestation" of the American thinker of German origin Franz Rosenthal.

Ikhlas said in her intervention on "Interpretation between Self-Passion and the Human Message", that the material payoff of translations is usually not high and does not entice the translator to spend his time in it if this is just his motive, so the serious and responsible translator lives a state of relationship between him and the translated text, based On love and the desire to reveal an unknown world.

She indicated that her work in her winning book, the winning translator, took 24 months in partnership with her husband, Yahya Al-Qaqaa, and commented along the period that translation of this work was not subject to normal standards, as it is a research translation, investigation, verification and deep reading on the same subject before proceeding with the translation, noting that the passionate translator The product of a good researcher because the translator also receives knowledge by translating it, not transferring text from one language to another.

Contemporary translations and readings

Prof. Jamal Shehid gave an intervention entitled "Responsibility of scientific institutions towards translated work", and touched on his experience in translating "Delights and Days" by Marcel Proust from French into Arabic, which enabled him to win second place in the 2017 edition of the award.

Shaheed explained that the translation situation in the Arab world has improved slightly in recent decades, but it is good because it indicates the prosperity of the translation movement again, noting that the credit for this is due to the institutions specialized in translation in the Arab world, including the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation.

He called for the need to fairly translate the translator and activate the protection of intellectual property in a clear and precise manner, due to the loss of the rights of translators in most cases, indicating the impact of support, encouragement and follow-up by those institutions on the quality of the translators and the interest of the mature Arab reader.

The third intervention, entitled "Reading in the prize languages ​​and the value of the subject or language," was presented by the American translator and academic, Dr. Michael Cuperson, who won first place in the 2016 edition of his translation of the book "The Rites of Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal", where he indicated that the contribution of the Sheikh Hamad Award is an honor The translated work for itself regardless of its language.

Cuperson praised the award’s distinguished honor for the winners of several languages ​​and the diversity of the translated works, which gives great value to its role in the flourishing of translation and encouraging translators.

He emphasized that the award is credited with encouraging sincerely work and motivating the owners of the challenge to translate "impossible works", as he did after the victory, as he devoted himself to translating "Maqamat Al-Hariri", pointing to the publication of his book after winning several editions in favor of American universities.

From Turkey, it was the talk of Dr. Muhammed Glick, who won first place in the 2015 edition of his translation of the book “The Arab Moral Mind” by the intellectual Muhammad Abed Al-Jabri, where he explained what it means to him to win an international award, stressing that it increased his sense of responsibility and prompted him to further intonation and follow-up to the most important intellectual works that Suitable for translation from both Arabic and Turkish languages.

Dr. Shui Qingguo of China - better known as Bassam - for winning the Achievement Award from Arabic to Chinese in the 2017 edition and known for his work in Chinese culture and Arab relations, spoke in the fifth intervention on China's role in advancing and enhancing translation with the aim of strengthening the country and pushing towards change, development and change of structure Cultural community of Chinese.

In a special statement to Al Jazeera Net, University of Toronto law professor Muhammad Fadil expressed his appreciation for who founded this award and sponsors it annually, and paid tribute to the committee based on the arbitration and the evaluation of the nominated works.
