Russian President’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on a traffic accident in Moscow involving actor Mikhail Efremov, which killed a man.

“Here, unfortunately, we are talking about a tragic incident, a monstrous incident when a drunk driver - and no matter who he is - caused an accident in which a person died,” Peskov emphasized.

A presidential spokesman noted that the Kremlin does not currently think about whether to deprive Mikhail Efremov of an honored artist of Russia after an accident.

Recall that Efremov had an accident in the evening of June 8 on Smolenskaya Square.

The actor, who was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee, drove into the oncoming lane and collided with a Lada van driven by Sergey Zakharov. The driver of the van was urgently hospitalized with multiple injuries at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute, where he later died.

An examination showed that the actor Efremov, who was driving, was drunk. He himself was not injured.

The interlocutor of the Interfax agency said that the man received multiple injuries to the head and chest.

“The doctors in SKLIF fought all night for his life. However, in the morning the man’s heart failed, he failed to restore his heart rate, ”the agency’s interlocutor said.

According to the source, the driver received multiple injuries of vital organs, he had abundant blood loss.

"The investigator of the SC MIA ATC for the Central Administrative District of Moscow decided to retrain to the heavier part of the article of the criminal case against the citizen who committed the accident on Smolenskaya Square in Moscow," RIA Novosti quoted the press service of the headquarters of the Ministry of Emergencies.

The case under article 264 of the Criminal Code of Russia in relation to Efremov was retrained from the second part to the fourth, it involves up to 12 years in prison.

First, a criminal case was opened against Efremov for violation of traffic rules committed in the state of intoxication, which entailed, through negligence, inflicting grievous harm to human health (up to seven years in prison).

Efremov himself has not yet commented on his attitude to the new charge. This was stated by his lawyer Vitaly Chernyshev.

“Yesterday he was interrogated as a suspect, he did not deny his involvement, there was no official charge yet,” RIA Novosti quoted the lawyer as saying.

Chernyshev noted that the actor was interrogated before criminal proceedings were instituted, while the guilty plea took place during interrogation after the indictment. According to the lawyer, a new interrogation has not yet taken place “for technical reasons”.

Earlier it was reported that the actor pleaded guilty to the accident.

State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin instructed the State Duma Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption to take control of the accident investigation involving Efremov.

“As for pressure on the investigation, this is unacceptable. Let's ask the Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption to take this issue under control. The law is one for everyone - drunken riding is unacceptable, ”RIA Novosti quoted Volodin as saying.

According to eyewitnesses to the accident, which leads RIA Novosti, Efremov looked drunk. One of them said that the SUV drove into the oncoming lane on Smolenskaya Square, where it collided with a van.

Another eyewitness commented: “Efremov literally rolled out of the jeep.” “And then he walked with difficulty, staggered,” she added. According to her, in order to pull the driver of the van out of the car, rescuers cut the body.

Incidents involving Mikhail Efremov have happened before.

On March 6, at the Pulkovo airport in St. Petersburg, Efremov was not allowed to board an AirBaltic airline flying to Riga. According to media reports, representatives of the airline refused the actor due to the fact that he was intoxicated.

Earlier in March 2018, Mikhail Efremov was at the center of the scandal because of his behavior during the play “Do not Become a Stranger” on tour in Samara.

Viewers reported that the performer of one of the main roles was late for his appearance on the stage, confused the text, spoke quietly, and also entered into a bickering with the audience using obscene language.

Criminal liability

Drunk driving is one of the most severe traffic violations. For driving while intoxicated, the deprivation of rights and a large monetary fine in the amount of 30,000 rubles and deprivation of rights for a period of 1.5-2 years suffers.

The perpetrator of the “drunk” accident could face up to seven years in prison if an accident caused by his fault caused serious harm to the health of the victim.

If a person died in an accident through the fault of a drunk driver, the perpetrator can be sentenced to imprisonment for up to 12 years. If the actions of a drunken motorist caused the death of several (two or more) people, then they can put him in prison for 15 years.
