Minneapolis City Council President Lisa Bender says she wants to move police funding to community-building measures. The City Council will discuss how to replace the current police organization.

"We are committed to ending police work as it looks in Minneapolis in order to create a new model for public safety with the city that actually makes our residents safe," she tells CNN.

"Unable to reform"

Alondra Cano, a member of the Minneapolis City Council, writes on Twitter that a majority has agreed that "the Minneapolis Police Department cannot be reformed and that the current police system will cease."

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is opposed to getting rid of the police department, as well as the base of the city's powerful police department, Bob Kroll, who last year appeared on stage with President Donald Trump. Earlier this weekend, Kroll was called out and asked to leave a protest assembly. He has since said that he supports "massive structural reform" but not "abolish the entire police organization".

Reduced appropriations in New York

For two weeks, the United States has been characterized by protests against the police since George Floyd was killed during an intervention in Minneapolis. And many who demonstrate demand that the police receive reduced funding.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Sunday that he will lower the city's police budget in favor of youth activities and social services, reports local media.

President Trump has responded to demands for reduced police spending to attack Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

Biden visits Floyd's family

Biden, who has blamed Trump for the "flames of hatred", plans to travel to Houston on Monday to visit George Floyd's family. He will also record a message to be read at Floyd's funeral on Tuesday.

Detention negotiations for the police who will be charged with causing Floyd's death are being held on Monday, KSTP-TV reports. Prosecution is also waiting for the three other police officers who participated in the intervention on May 25.
