It is at more than 4,000 meters above sea level, on the shores of Lake Pangong which separates the two countries, that India and China have tried this Saturday to settle a dispute which has opposed them for decades. This relates to the course of the border between the Indian region of Ladakh, in Kashmir, and that of Xinjiang in China.

China accuses India of building infrastructure on its territory, while India accuses China of massing troops at the border. On May 5, more than 100 soldiers were injured by a stick during a skirmish between the two largest armies in Asia in the area.

No clear results

A month later, on June 5, the two countries decided to find a diplomatic solution to their dispute. Led by the two military commanders of the regions concerned, the talks on Saturday lasted until evening, without leading to clear results.

Indian General Harinder Singh found the exchange positive and likely to allow a return to the border status quo , subject to further discussions. Many meetings have however taken place in the past between the two countries, without giving rise to lasting appeasement.
