Two months after its opening, the Rungis coffins reception center will close its doors. The decision was taken by the prefecture because of the drop in mortality in Île-de-France and the capacity of conventional funeral operators to receive caskets.

The "belly of Paris" will no longer host coffins. Requisitioned at the heart of the coronavirus epidemic to serve as a temporary morgue, one of Rungis' halls will be able to find its way back to its main activity. In fact, the Val-de-Marne prefecture and the Police prefecture have decided to close the reception center for Rungis coffins, "due to the positive development of the epidemic situation in Île-de-France". The depository, open since April 3, had been the subject of a controversy over the prices charged which had prompted the Ministry of the Interior to request a check.

Funeral operators "again able to take care of all the coffins"

As the Prefecture of Police explains in a press release, "the slowdown in the progression of the Covid-19 epidemic, observed for several weeks, continues in Île-de-France". This drop which "reflects the positive impact of containment measures and their compliance" has helped to relieve funeral operators in Ile-de-France. "They are once again able to take charge of all the coffins of the deceased," the press release said.

The Rungis depository therefore closes its doors after just over two months. The hall of Rungis "did not welcome any new coffins since Wednesday, May 13 to focus only on their gradual exit," said the police headquarters. She also underlines that "the installation of this site will have made it possible to reinforce punctually during the health crisis linked to Covid-19 the saturated capacities of the regional funeral chain".
