  • Covid-19.Boris Johnson, "proud" of his strategy with the country on the brink of 40,000 deaths
  • Pandemic. The chaotic "back to school" in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has surpassed the barrier of 40,000 deaths from coronavirus , the country with the highest number of deaths in Europe, in addition to second by the infection rate after Sweden. With 357 deaths in the last 24 hours in hospitals and in residences, the number of deaths rises to 40,261 , according to data from the Department of Health.

This week, however, the National Statistics Office has placed its calculations at 50,032 deaths, based on death certificates . Other estimates even speak of more than 60,000 "excessive" deaths so far this year, compared to the average of the previous five years.

The United Kingdom is currently the second country in the world by the number of deaths , behind the United States (110,000) and ahead of Brazil (34,072). The British Isles have left Italy, France and Spain behind. The government's own scientific adviser, Patrick Valllance, has admitted that the pandemic is receding more slowly than expected .

According to Sky News data, in the last week of May there were 236 confirmed cases per million , a figure surpassed only by Sweden, which did not impose confinement on the population. The United Kingdom was one of the last European countries to apply the "dead bolt" and has delayed much of the measures.

Still, 'Prime Minister' Boris Johnson said this week that he was "very proud" of his government's record: "We have protected the National Health System, we are lowering the death rate and we have less and less hospital admissions." Labor opposition leader Keir Starmer accused him in parliament of "having turned a difficult situation into a situation ten times worse."

Johnson, who went through the ICU after contracting the disease, has been in the spotlight in recent weeks due to the chaos of the de-escalation and the scandal involving his strategist Dominic Cummings, who violated the confinement and traveled 400 kilometers with his family. The "premier" has also been harshly criticized this week by airlines, which threaten to take the government to court for the 14-day quarantine of travelers to the United Kingdom starting June 8.
