The interior ministers of the European Union agreed during a virtual meeting today to reopen most of the internal borders on June 15.

The European Council in Brussels said that Spain is one of the exceptions and will reopen its borders as soon as July 1.

"For countries not belonging to the Schengen security zone, a proposal will be presented, and an agreement on this should be concluded between June 15 and the beginning of July," said Belgian Interior Minister Peter de Crem.

For her part, Yelva Johansson, the European Commissioner for Internal Security Affairs, said that the decision is up to the member states and there are some countries that seem more cautious about opening external borders.

Central European countries "Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia" opened their borders to citizens of other countries today.
