Västerås is one of the municipalities that work actively to reduce the effects of chemicals on people and the environment.

As part of the EU project Nonhazcity with the aim of reducing the harmful substances that end up in the Baltic Sea, families could receive support in reducing the proportion of chemicals in their homes.

When the experts from Västerås city environment and health protection management visited Magdalena, Conny, Abbe and Celine Evaldson, they went through room for room, picked out worse and better examples and gave advice and tips.

- Most surprised I was probably over the old wooden toys we had from my husband and which we thought were good and decent. There it was the paint that was not good, says Magdalena Evaldson.

As a next step in the project, there will be an app and a kind of "do it yourself kit" that individuals can use to make their home more chemical-smart. This is explained by Susanna Grystad, chemical coordinator in the city of Västerås. Photo: Jenny Berggren / SVT
