French Presidents Emanuel Macron and Algerian Abdel Majid Taboun emphasized, in a telephone conversation between them, that they fully respect the privacy and sovereignty of both countries.

This position comes from the two countries' presidents days after the Algerian Foreign Ministry announced its summons to its ambassador in France for consultations, in protest against what it called "a attack by French government channels on the Algerian people and their institutions", including the military.

The French government channel, "France 5", broadcast at the end of last May a documentary entitled "Algeria My Love", which dealt with the march of the popular movement in Algeria, which sparked a widespread anger in the popular and political circles.

In the film, Algerians saw that the channel summarized the demands of the popular movement in the Algerian youth’s search for freedom outside of social restrictions, and included comments warning of Islamic extremism similar to what happened in the 1990s.

The announcement of the two presidents also comes after several French official positions regarding the popular movement in Algeria, which were not welcomed in Algeria.

A statement by the Algerian presidency stated that Macron and Taboun discussed - during their phone calls - "bilateral relations, and they agreed to give them an ambitious push on permanent basis that guarantees mutual mutual interest and full respect for the privacy and sovereignty of both countries."

He added that the two presidents "also touched on the situation in Libya and the countries of the Sahel in light of the suffering of their peoples from wars and conflicts."

In this regard, the statement stated that the two presidents "agreed to coordinate in order to put an end to this by helping to establish security and stability in the region."

The statement added that, during the call, an "exchange of information" took place on the efforts made to prevent the spread of the Corona virus pandemic in the two countries.

It is noteworthy that the French Foreign Ministry had responded to the Algerian decision to summon its ambassador to consult after the controversial film was broadcast, saying that "freedom of the media in France is complete and that the law protects it," explaining that "France respects Algeria's sovereignty and will work to deepen relations with it."
