Last month, the Colombian magazine Semana revealed the existence of a vast spy network of military intelligence. A hundred people were allegedly illegally spied on in 2019 thanks to computerized means: journalists, including several Americans, but also politicians, retired soldiers, representatives of NGOs and unionists.

One of the soldiers involved told the magazine that he had been ordered to transmit certain information collected to a well-known politician from the Democratic Center. It is the party of President Ivan Duque, a party led by Alvaro Uribe. On Tuesday, June 2, the Supreme Court therefore opened a preliminary inquiry to determine whether the former president, now a senator, was the recipient of this espionage.

A political journey interspersed with numerous scandals

The interested party, who rejects these accusations en bloc, is not his first case. Use of forgery, subornation of witnesses, but also cocaine trafficking and enrichment of his sons ... Many scandals have splashed the career of Alvaro Uribe, and dozens of investigations have been launched against him, without ever being condemned.

If evidence were found, the Supreme Court could launch a criminal trial against the former head of state, who continues to dominate the political scene and divide the Colombians.
