  • Since Tuesday evening, all of the candidates for the 2nd round of the municipal elections have been known.
  • What forces will there be in Aix-en-Provence, Avignon or Arles? We decipher all this.

What if the second round of the 2020 municipal elections marked a turning point? In several major cities in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, given the sometimes surprising results of the first round, everything suggests that this somewhat special election will open a new page in the political history of these municipalities. Overview of hot spots to follow the evening of June 28.

Aix-en-Provence, LREM's last hope

In the governing bodies of the presidential party, eyes are on Aix-en-Provence. It must be said that the Bouches-du-Rhône sub-prefecture represents one of the few possible conquests for LREM, while its chances of victory for these municipal elections are more than slim on the national level. Nothing is done, however. LREM MP Anne-Laurence Petel came in second place in the first round, with 20.45% of the vote.

The parliamentarian came to weaken, without necessarily vacillating, the outgoing mayor LR Maryse Joissains-Masini, who came out on top with 30.28% of the vote, despite legal setbacks which tainted the campaign of the councilor. A third challenger, in the person of Marc Pena, DVG candidate, qualified for the second round with 15.88% of the votes.

Alliances have tried to succeed to counter the omnipotence of Maryse Joissains, in particular between Anne-Laurence Petel and her deputy in the National Assembly, the candidate EELV Dominique Sassoon, who came in fourth position. In vain. "My substitute was open to this merger, but not the national party cadres," sighs the member. I regret this attitude. "

Arles, from communism to Patrick de Carolis?

Communist bastion, Arles, sub-prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône, sees its political game replayed. In the casting of these somewhat surprising elections, the former president of France Télévisions Patrick de Carolis (without label), leading in the first round, with 26.4% of the vote, before the successor of the outgoing communist mayor, Nicolas Koukas (21 , 2%). Last weekend, the LR candidate, Cyril Juglaret, who had gathered 15.3% of the vote, announced his withdrawal in favor of Patrick de Carolis, in order to prevent the left from winning. The former television man claims "a social fiber" to "get the city out of the doldrums" and appeared at the top of an unlabeled list.

His rival Nicolas Koukas, 44, has been elected for 18 years and successor designated by the outgoing mayor, Hervé Schiavetti, in office since 2001. Heir to the outgoing Communist municipality, he stands out from it, however, posting a list "renewed at 80 % ”, An“ open, progressive team, from the Socialist Party, environmentalists and even people from the center right ”… and including only two inset Communists.

A quadrangular in Avignon

In Avignon, voters will finally have to choose between four lists. Leading the vote in the first round, with 34.46% of the vote, the outgoing socialist mayor, Cécile Helle, did not follow up on a possible agreement with her opponent EELV, Jean-Pierre Cervantes. This former member of his majority had won no less than 15.56% of the vote and will therefore run against it.

On the right, the RN candidate, Anne-Sophie Ringault, who came in second position with 21.53%, made foot calls to the candidate LR Michel Bissière and his 11.44%. But they will indeed leave in separate corridors to try to grab the mayor's chair from Cécile Helle, who remains widely preferred in such a configuration

The homeland of Christophe Castaner soon on the right?

In Forcalquier, these municipal elections are somewhat special. For the first time in a long time, the name of Christophe Castaner does not appear on any of the lists. Elected socialist mayor of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence sub-prefecture in 2001, Christophe Castaner ceded his chair to one of his assistants in July 2017 to devote himself entirely to his brand new ministerial functions. Still a municipal councilor, the Minister of the Interior decided to take advantage of these elections to definitively abandon any local mandate. This decision opens a new page in the history of the town, especially since his replacement, Gérard Avril, decided not to stack.

Surprisingly, in the city of one of the historic LREM executives, no candidate wears the colors of the presidential party, nor claims this parentage. But the shadow of the Minister of the Interior hangs over these elections. Two candidates are neck and neck, with only six votes apart. On the one hand, Dominique Rouanet, at the head of a citizen movement, a former disappointed deputy for Castaner, won 41.82% of the vote. His opponent, regional councilor LR David Géhant, opponent of Castaner for years, for his part convinced 42.09% of the voters.

The uncertain bet of the RN in Carpentras

Former stronghold of Marion Maréchal-Le Pen, MP for this sector before Secretary of State Brune Poirson defeated her on her land in 2017, the town of Carpentras was one of the hopes displayed by the National Rally for these municipal elections. The first round, however, somewhat contradicted the prognoses of Marine Le Pen's party. Admittedly, General Bertrand de la Chesnais, supported by the RN but not from his ranks, strategy assumed by the party, qualified for the second round with 30.88% of the votes. But he ranked behind the outgoing mayor of various left Serge Andrieu (35.85%).

In this long in-between lap, Bertrand de la Chesnais tried to forge an alliance with his LR opponent, Claude Melquior. But after weeks of discussion, Claude Melquior decided to leave alone, strong with his 17.38%. For this election, Bertrand de la Chesnais can however count on the displayed support of an important political figure in Carpentras: the former UMP mayor of the town, Jean-Claude Andrieu.
