In the clip above, Anna Skarsjö talks about the lack of oral protection and the situation at Geråshus.

During the spring, 28 people died at Geråshus in Bergsjön, 21 of them in confirmed covid-19 and another 7 in suspected infection. There are unusually many - and the situation is the same in several elderly homes around the county.

Between April 2 and May 10, 30 per cent more died in the county's housing, compared with the previous three years. There are similar figures for the whole country, which SVT can reveal today (link). It is then about people who have been registered in the housing for the elderly, and it is about death overall, not just because of covid-19.

Protective equipment was missing

Protective equipment has been missing at many elderly homes in Gothenburg, according to Anna Skarsjö, chair of the local trade union Municipality in the region.

"Our safety representatives have had to fight in many places, especially in Gothenburg to get the right protective equipment," she says.

Ulrica Reibring, area manager for elderly residents in East Gothenburg and, among others, for Geråshus, believes that they have followed the guidelines.

- We have always followed the routines of the Public Health Authority and the protection of infections, she says.

"Missing local action plans"

Anna Skarsjö is also critical of the lack of emergency preparedness for elderly residents in Gothenburg.

- There were no local action plans. Very few of the local unit heads have talked to their local security officers about how to deal with the infection if it comes in. Which made it an emergency situation when it arrived, she says.

Elsewhere in the county there are more positive examples, she says.

- We have municipalities outside Gothenburg where you have succeeded incredibly well, where you do not have a single infected on the elderly residents. There, the crisis plans were started immediately when the signals were received, says Anna Skarsjö.

"Is there all the time"

According to the union, did you not have emergency preparedness plans in March, April and May?

- The crisis management plan is in the administration all the time. On March 11, we looked at what we would do if we lost a lot in staffing, says Ulrica Reibring, area manager for elderly residents in East Gothenburg.

In winter sickness you have extra staff and you have mouthguards. But at covid-19 the staff didn't have it?

- We followed the guidelines. But we always work according to basic hygiene routines and 95 percent of employees at Geråshus have taken a hygiene driving license, a new web-based system, says Ulrica Reibring.
