MSB started work in March with a digital covid-19 questionnaire that would be answered via mobile. The idea was to carry out a national survey of symptoms.

But the project has been riddled with difficult disagreements and on May 8 it was decided to scrap the whole idea, according to previous information in SVT.

Warned by lawyers

Now Sweden's Radio Ekot reports that MSB was warned by external lawyers about the risks of storing data with Amazon Web Services, according to documents that Ekot has taken note of.

After the warning, MSB chose to continue with Amazon as a supplier.

- These capacity issues were very important. There, Amazon was a company that was able to deliver at a different level and in less time than any other, says Svante Werger, MSB's special adviser to Ekot.

Cost: 15 million

The project has so far cost MSB 14 million and costs are expected to rise to a total of SEK 15 million, says Ekot and refers to data from MSB.

Google and the Swedish identification app BankID were other suppliers in the project. Both would be given access to personal data. In Google's case, these were users' IP addresses that would be stored on US servers, says Ekot.

The vulnerabilities in the scheme were never examined by any external player, reports Ekot.

- I feel for my own part that I am in no way ashamed that we pulled full speed in this work to try and quickly get something that could be supportive of the infection management in Sweden, says Svante Werger to Ekot.
