01 June 2020 The referendum on the reform of the Constitution, which among other things will make it possible for Vladimir Putin to remain potentially in power until 2036, will take place on 1 July. This was announced by the Russian president himself, thus setting the new date for the popular consultation that was to be held on April 22 but that had been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"July 1 is a legally flawless date," but also the health situation, because "with a whole month ahead, we have the opportunity to make further progress," said the president speaking at a meeting of a working group on amendments to the Constitution.
