• Announcement of cessation.Culture dispenses with Cortés at the IVAM: a contest will choose the new direction

The Advisory Council of the IVAM ( Valencian Institute of Modern Art ) has unanimously submitted its resignation due to "unilateral political decisions" and "known to the press" that "raise the dismissal and replacement of the management team", headed by José Miguel García Polite .

As stated in the letter sent to the Ministry of Culture and made public by García Cortés himself, the Advisory Council recalls that it is up to it to rule "on any artistic issue that may arise from the main activity of the aforementioned entity" and that the decision of replacing the director "constitutes not only a breach of the Code of Good Practices in Valencian culture, but subsidiarily also of the State Code of Good Practices and the ICOM Code of Ethics for museums".

Likewise, it is exposed that "said decisions suppose, fundamentally, a violation of the independence of the institution, which must decide its future and operation from the Governing Council, as established by Law 1/2018, of February 9, of the Generalitat, regulator of the Institut Valencià d Art Modern ".

"Given this situation, the Advisory Council of IVAM understands that it cannot be a participant in this type of action, and therefore announces that all its members have unanimously decided to present their resignation."

Pedro Azara , tenured professor of Aesthetics in the Department of Theory and History of the Higher Technical School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, formed part of this Advisory Council ; María Dolores Jiménez-Blanco , director of the Department of Art History of the Complutense University of Madrid; David Pérez , professor of Keys to Contemporary Artistic Discourse at the Universitat Politècnica de València and Álvaro M. Pons , full professor at the Universitat de València and Director of the Chair of Comic Studies at the SM-Universitat de València Foundation.

After learning about this resignation en bloc, and also in a statement, the still director of the IVAM has "deeply regretted" these resignations and stated that: "I have always believed that we must add maximum efforts to carry out the program of our great national museum, without subtracting or leaving anyone behind. "

"More, if possible, at a time of serious crisis and uncertainty like the current one. Defending the Code of Good Practices (which the Ministry of Culture has signed) means: enabling the exchange of opinions with all the people involved; having professionals from the world of art; involving the Advisory Committee and the Governing Council of IVAM in the decisions to be made; evaluating exclusively professional reasons and not getting carried away by political or personal issues. "

"When unilateral decisions are made instead, problems are created in institutions that did not have them and that work satisfactorily. I am convinced that the IVAM would have saved all this painful process if it had avoided falling into tax attitudes and had counted on all sectors, since the IVAM project is not a particular project. "

And he added: "In the task of rebuilding the IVAM, no one is left out, much less, professionals as qualified as the members of the Advisory Committee. I want to thank all of them publicly for their ethical coherence in not wanting to be involved in tax behavior and showing them my sincere thanks for all your selfless efforts and efforts for IVAM ".
