  • Nearly 30% of Toulouse cafes and restaurants are not expected to reopen on Tuesday, June 2.
  • To help them cope with the new sanitary measures, the town hall of Toulouse has authorized extensions of temporary terraces in particular.
  • More than 200 establishments have made a request to this effect, and undertake in return to sign a protocol.

Close a street section so that a bistro can extend its terrace or even transform parking spaces or restaurant extensions. These are some of the proposals put in place by the Toulouse town hall to help cafes and other businesses in the sector to resume service on Tuesday.

In the Pink City, nearly 30% of the players in the sector hit hard by the coronavirus crisis and the restrictive measures should remain closed on Tuesday. “The idea is to try to save everyone and give a breath of fresh air. There are establishments that did not have terraces and that are given parking spaces to expand, for example, "said Jean-Jacques Bolzan, the trade assistant for the Pink City who decided to exempt terraces rights traders.

A part of the rue des Trois Journées will thus be closed so that a bar and a restaurant can extend their terrace and thus maintain an economically acceptable gauge to receive its customers. Other orders have also been taken as rue de la Concorde where the café of the same name now has the right to extend its terrace onto parking spaces.

Where this is not possible, the town hall is also considering installing chalets in certain areas where establishments could set up.

Constraints

But before getting the green light from the town hall, these bistros had to follow a protocol. Beyond the technical feasibility, the owners agree to comply with health rules, not to obstruct pedestrian traffic, not to put on music or generate noise. And local residents' associations, some of which are sometimes involved, are consulted.

If these restrictions are not respected, the authorizations could be suspended, warns the town hall.

More than 200 of them have already applied for an extension on the public highway. And for the time being, these authorizations for terrace extensions are valid until September 30, 2020.
