"The important thing now is that we continue to have a good dialogue with the government and the municipalities and to continue to support the associations in reorganizing," says Kristin Stenman, district sports manager in Västmanland.

When the application deadline to apply for money from the government's compensation aid expired on May 15, about a fifth of the county's sports associations, which are the target group for the aid, had done so.

Does not cover the financial losses

But just as elsewhere in the country, RF-SISU Västmanland has flagged that the money will not be enough.

In a local survey, Västmanland's sports associations estimate that they have lost over SEK 40 million so far during the pandemic. Partly because of canceled competitions, cups and previous opportunities to make money for the association.

At the same time, the county sports association's preliminary calculations show that only about SEK 12.5 million of the government's allocated pot is expected to be paid out to Västmanland.

- So far, it is mainly slightly larger associations that have been hit hardest, but at the same time it looks very different, says Kristin Stenman.

In the government's support package for sports, SEK 500 million has been allocated to replace sports associations - mainly those with children and youth activities - for the loss of income the corona pandemic led to during the period 12 March to 30 June. Photo: archive
