A solidarity demonstration in favor of migrants, scheduled for Saturday in the capital, was banned, announced Thursday the Paris police headquarters, which invoked the decree prohibiting gatherings of more than 10 people because of the Covid-19.

"The health risks that such an event is likely to generate, justify that the prefect of police, does not authorize, by way of derogation, this demonstration", commented the prefecture of police of Paris (PP) in a press release.

"A real health bomb"

The call for this "march of solidarity", to request the regularization of undocumented migrants and a review of French migration policy, was relayed by nearly 210 organizations and 300 personalities, according to a text posted on social networks.

"For these populations the current health crisis is becoming a veritable health bomb," say the promoters of the march, who had announced a demonstration "with masks and physical distancing". Other gatherings are also planned in France.

According to the PP, the Parisian march, planned from Place de la Madeleine to that of the Republic, contravenes the decree of May 11, taken as part of the extension of the state of health emergency and which provides for the ban on gatherings more than 10 people to fight the Covid-19 epidemic.

Questioned by AFP, the prefecture said that "a police system will be put in place to enforce the ban on demonstrations". A police source clarified that the ban on the demonstration, which was to gather several hundred participants, is not motivated by fears of disturbing public order.
