So far, about 70 people who have been cared for in an intensive care unit in Östergötland have had to leave intensive care, according to new figures from Region Östergötland.

Some 50 have now been discharged from the hospital, while approximately 20 patients are being cared for in another ward.

- It is both sad and happy when someone leaves the intensive care unit. You get a relationship with patients who have been here for a long time, says undersea nurse Therése Mechlenburg, who makes a video diary for SVT Nyheter Öst.

Of the patients in Östergötland diagnosed with covid-19 who have so far been reported to the Swedish Intensive Care Register, SIR, the following can be read:

57 survived intensive care:

57 out of 70 patients, who have been cared for at IVA (Intensive Care Unit) in Norrköping or Linköping, have left the Intensive Care Unit. Thirteen of 70 reported patients have died. One patient has been transferred to another hospital.

31 were cared for at IVA for more than ten days:

Care times are considerably longer than usual. In general, IVA care times are between one and three days. But as many as 52 of 70 patients with covid-19 have been cared for at IVA for more than three days.

31 patients have been treated for IVA for more than 10 days. One patient has been cared for at IVA for more than 30 days.

The average time spent in Linköping is 9.28 days. In Norrköping, the mean time of care is 13.45 days.

The majority are men:

Most of the patients who have been cared for at IVA in Norrköping and Linköping are men. 72 percent of the patients at IVA in Linköping were men. 65 percent of the patients in Norrköping were men.

Most people over 60:

Those cared for at IVA in Norrköping and Linköping are often over 50, but rarely over 80 years.

Only 13 of the patients treated with covid-19 at IVA in Norrköping and Linköping were under 50 years of age. As many as 57 of the patients were over 50 years of age.

Only two IVA patients were under 30 years of age, while 39 patients were over 60 years of age.

Only three IVA patients were over 80 years of age.

The mean age of the covid-19 patients cared for at IVA was 57.6 years in Linköping and 64.4 years in Norrköping.

These figures only apply to patients who have been reported to the Swedish Intensive Care Register and who have been cared for with the diagnosis of covid-19 at an intensive care unit in Norrköping or Linköping. There may be more patients who have not yet been registered.
