United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in an interview with Al-Jazeera that the Coruna epidemic has demonstrated the fragility of the world, criticizing the Security Council's inability to punish those who violate the arms embargo in Libya.

Guterres stressed that the conflict and the deep division between America and China hindered the joint international effort to combat the Corona pandemic, pointing to the importance of international unity and solidarity in order to eliminate the virus.

He said the "Covid-19" epidemic demonstrated the magnitude of the world's fragility, which makes it unable to deal effectively with this virus.

"We need unity and solidarity in order to eliminate it. Unfortunately, there is not enough solidarity, especially with developing countries," he added.

He stopped at the spread of the epidemic in Africa, Latin America and some parts of Asia, noting that the tools the international system needs to help these countries to eliminate the virus and protect its citizens and reduce the dramatic economic and social consequences of this virus are unfortunately not available enough, he said.

With regard to international dealing with the spread of the virus, he said that there is a division, and that one of the manifestations of this division is the presence of different strategies and international differences, and an ineffective coordination of the work required to defeat the virus.

He also pointed to the current division between the world's two major economic powers - China and the United States - deeply on this issue. He said the United Nations wants them to engage jointly and lead the world in order to coordinate efforts aimed at eradicating this virus.

Security Council and Libya
Guterres expressed concern that the Security Council was not able to impose sanctions on those who violate the arms embargo in Libya, especially since there are resolutions issued by the UN Security Council on the prevention of arms exports.

"I really feel completely disappointed that the UN Security Council has not yet been able to use the tools available to impose the necessary sanctions and ensure that these violations are ended and that the Libyan people have the opportunity to enter into a political process and dialogue, and to reach the peace that they need for their future," he added. .

He stressed that the presence of mercenaries is totally unacceptable, that the flow of arms is totally unacceptable, and that there are several types of support for both sides in this framework from the outside, which is totally unacceptable, he said.
