09 May 2020The Alpine Rescue of Cortina was alerted around 9.30 am. The young man from Belluno, who was descending from Rotzes with his brother, was overwhelmed by the avalanche that dragged him over 200 meters. The brother, who remained higher, immediately raised the alarm and the helicopter of the Suem of Pieve di Cadore headed on the spot, after having boarded personnel from the Alpine Rescue and the Finance Police of Cortina. Once the body was located at around 2,550 meters above sea level, the rescuers were disembarked with a 70 meter winch. The body, recomposed and embarrassed, was recovered and transported downstream, to then be accompanied to the mortuary cell of Cortina. The ambulance also boarded the young man's brother, who was unharmed.

"In the area close to the one where the avalanche took place, at least a hundred people were skiing", says a witness of the avalanche that hit the town of Cortina, in the Tofana di Rozes area. The dead young man was skiing on the Pillar area. In many this morning they went to the Angelo Di Bona Refuge and from there they were skiing along the Tofana valley.

And this morning there was also an alarm for an avalanche released from Punta Penia, on the Marmolada glacier. Alpine rescue personnel and the Trentino Emergenza helicopter intervened in the area to search for missing persons. At the moment there are no people involved.
