The Center for Geographic Information Systems, affiliated to the Dubai Municipality, announced the completion of imaging all the features and buildings of the emirate, and linking them to smart systems, which are transferred to the main database smoothly and quickly, in the framework of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai Chairman of the Executive Council, by transforming the Dubai government into a fully intelligent model, and making Dubai an address for smart cities in the world.

The Director General of Dubai Municipality, Eng. Dawood Al Hajri, stressed that this achievement comes within the municipality’s strategy and commitment to providing the finest services, in accordance with the highest international standards followed, to develop smart and innovative solutions that allow the use of geographic information systems, and benefit from them in providing accurate data that helps in the decision-making process, It contributes to enhancing user experiences in various fields.

Al-Hajri said: “The three-dimensional imaging of the landmarks of the Emirate of Dubai was carried out by the Dubai Municipality’s Geospatial Scanning Vehicle, which is an integrated system for collecting geospatial data that installs the top of the car to perform field surveying using a high-resolution laser scanner and GPS satellite positioning devices. In addition to a group of panoramic cameras for 360-degree vision, to produce accurate 3D data for all of the emirate’s features accurately, data is collected during the car’s traveling at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour, and it is processed to produce an integrated digital model ». He added: «The scanning process is characterized by a high-precision geospatial scanning system, and by the high speed in data collection operations within all areas surveyed, even those that witness densities and crowds.» He explained that this system is characterized by efficiency in producing three-dimensional models and extracting accurate data for Dubai landmarks, which includes government assets and public utilities in all its forms of infrastructure installations and event sites. The system also provides accurate data from inside large buildings such as airports and exhibitions, and 3D models for open areas Such as parks, squares, and stadiums, as well as tunnels.

The system outputs owned by Dubai Municipality outperform those of the systems used in the field of regular panoramic imaging of landmarks, using lasers that produce dense clouds of coordinates that form geometric features with a precision of five centimeters that enables the production of a three-dimensional model of all the features covered and converted into accurate data, Parallel panoramic photography is only limited by providing general view.

The first government department

Dubai Municipality is the first government department in Dubai to have such an integrated geospatial data collection system, which is an essential component in building the Dubai digital twin model, which is an enhancement of infrastructure.

Geospatial survey technology is one of the supporting elements of sustainable cities, by giving its decision-makers the ability to manage, integrate and analyze big and complex data related to these cities, which is also one of the main foundations of smart cities.
