04 May 2020The global marathon has started at 14 with the initial goal of raising € 7.5 billion with which to finance the discovery and production of a coronavirus vaccine as well as effective therapies to combat it in infected people. The initiative was presented about ten days ago during an event organized by the WHO (World Health Organization) in which numerous heads of government took part (for Italy, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte), while not the United States had joined.

The event that kicked off today is co-organized by the European Union, Great Britain, Norway, Japan, Canada and Saudi Arabia and aims to raise funds over several weeks if not months by adding to the dowry already made available. by the world bank and the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation as well as by other private donors.

During the presentation event, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen expressed the hope that the conference will turn into a real marathon of donations to bring the vaccine at affordable prices to every corner of the world. The amount of donations may not be disclosed immediately and it is unclear how much of the donations that will be announced represent new money and not previously announced amounts. Meanwhile, the first donation came from Saudi Arabia, currently at the G20 Presidency, which has already announced its intention to donate $ 500 million.
