Reverol said a group of mercenaries landed from the coast of Guayla State in northern Venezuela by speedboat in the early hours of the same day in an attempt to commit violence, create chaos, and initiate a coup. The Venezuelan security forces exchanged fire with this group of terrorists, killing and arresting many people. He said the search operation is continuing and the government will investigate the incident.
Reverol said that the coup attempt was related to the imperialist plan to overthrow the Venezuelan government. He asked the Venezuelan people to be vigilant and reiterated that the Venezuelan government will resolutely combat terrorist acts.
According to reports, the coastal town of Macuto, where the exchange of fire took place, is about 40 kilometers from the Venezuelan capital Caracas. Some residents posted news on social media that in the early hours of the day, the town continued to ring gunshots and explosions, and some residents witnessed more than a dozen mercenaries landing with weapons and fighting with the Venezuelan army.
Guaido, former Venezuelan parliamentary chairman and opposition leader, launched a military coup in April 2019, but was defeated. Since last year, the United States has continued to exert extreme pressure on Venezuela economically, politically, diplomatically, and militaryly, and jointly with some countries in Latin America to pressure the current government to step down.
