Indian actor Irrfan Khan, who made himself known in particular in "Slumdog Millionaire", died at the age of 53, we learned on Wednesday from his agent.

The Bollywood star, who was diagnosed with a rare cancer in 2018, was admitted to Bombay Hospital this week for a colon infection.

"Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought to the end and always inspired everyone who approached him," his agent said in a statement.

Born in 1967 in the state of Rajasthan in India, Irrfan Khan had started his career in the 1980s. He was notably spotted for his almost silent role in "The Warrior" (2001), adaptation of a traditional Japanese tale by British director Asif Kapadia.

A few years later, he embarked on an international career, playing alongside Angelina Jolie in the drama "An undefeated heart" by Michael Winterbottom, presented in Cannes.

In 2008, his face had become world famous thanks to "Slumdog Millionaire" by Danny Boyle, film at the eight Oscars where he camped a police inspector.

Irrfan Khan had pursued his career in the United States playing in blockbusters like "The Amazing Spider-Man" (2012), "Jurassic World" (2015), and "Inferno" (2016).

The actor had been praised by critics for his roles in "The Odyssey of Pi" (2012) by the Taiwanese Ang Lee and "The Lunchbox" (2013), a romantic comedy by Ritesh Batra in which a man and a woman interact from a distance via a lunch bowl.
