Martin Griffiths, the Secretary-General of the United Nations' envoy to Yemen, expressed concern over the announcement of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council to impose self-administration and a state of emergency in areas controlled by southern Yemen.

The UAE, through Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, also announced its "opposition" to the announcement of the Transitional Council, "calling" for the full implementation of the Riyadh Agreement on the South signed last November.

The UAE official refusal comes after a similar announcement by the Saudi-Emirati coalition in Yemen, which "affirmed the necessity of returning conditions" to its former era in Aden after the announcement of the transitional council.

Griffiths said - in a press release - today that the recent turn of events in Aden is disappointing, especially since the city and other areas in the south have not yet recovered from the recent floods and face the threat of the Corona pandemic.

Griffiths also called for the speedy implementation of the Riyadh Agreement, which provides for the participation of the Southern Transitional Council in consultations on the final political solution to ending the conflict in Yemen, calling on all political actors to cooperate "in good faith and refrain from taking escalatory measures."

In turn, the Saudi-Emirati alliance announced the necessity of canceling any step that violates the Riyadh agreement, and made clear that it has taken practical steps to implement the agreement that represents the framework that the two parties - the legitimate government and the Transitional Council - unanimously agreed to unite ranks, return state institutions and counter the threat of terrorism.

The coalition stressed that it is the responsibility of the signatories of the agreement to take clear steps towards implementing its provisions, and to stop any escalatory moves.

Blow the efforts for
its part, the Yemeni government described yesterday the announcement of the Southern Transitional Council, the Self-Administration of South Yemen, that it blew up the efforts made months ago to implement the Riyadh agreement and address the repercussions of the armed rebellion that took place early August.

In the statement of the council and the leaders present in Abu Dhabi, the government held full responsibility for not implementing the Riyadh agreement, and it renewed its call for the Saudi-Emirati alliance to assume its historical responsibilities towards the unity of Yemen and its territorial integrity.

The Yemeni government called on the international community, the United Nations, the Arab League, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Gulf Cooperation Council to condemn what it described as a "coup" and support the legitimate government to implement Security Council resolutions on Yemen.
