Some 200,000 accounts have been created on approved online poker sites since the start of the health crisis. The explosion of online gambling during confinement, however, worries addictologists who are no longer able to follow their patients.

With confinement, you are surely looking for occupations to kill time ... For some, it is online gambling, starting with poker. The game attracts more and more followers, for lack of sports bets, stopped because of confinement. For online poker, there are now more than 500,000 active player accounts in France on approved sites, against 300,000 before the health crisis triggered by the new coronavirus. Europe 1 met Cédric.

"I happened to play at 8 am"

"I don't set limits for myself, there are days where I play around fifteen games, for example," says Cédric. "It's super dangerous, I have to be careful." With confinement, this horse racing enthusiast has abandoned horse racing betting. Stuck at home in telework, he started playing online poker. An endless hobby, admits this player: "There are game sessions all day long, and people around the clock. I happened to get up, log in and play at 8 am morning ", he admits. "I'm wondering if I'm going to reinject money because the confinement lasts ..."

The concern of addictologists

Others have already cracked. In recent weeks, bets have almost tripled on online betting sites. For addictologists, it is difficult to act on patients confined with their screens. "If you could go out, go and see friends ... Here, we adapt to a new situation," explains addictologist Bernard Antoine to Europe 1. "We offer them to watch a film, to do a breathing exercise. We do what we can."

This destitute doctor especially fears post-confinement, because even if everyday life resumes its course, addictions, they persist.
