The end of the Italian football season will be postponed from June 30 to August 2 in order to give the Serie A championship, which was interrupted in early March, a chance to conclude.

In a statement, the Italian federation (FIGC) said it intended to adopt "a resolution postponing until August 2 the end of the 2019-2020 sports season".

On Tuesday, all of the Serie A clubs voted in favor of a resumption of the championship, which was interrupted on March 9. A will now dependent on the decisions of the Italian government.

The federation shares this desire and the clubs hope to be authorized to resume training from May 4, the date on which the government should begin to relax the containment measures imposed since March 10, or within two weeks.

"The world of football is working tirelessly and responsibly to find concrete and viable solutions to the crisis caused by the Covid-19, including the solutions that are necessary and essential to safeguard the competitions of the next season," said writes Gabriele Gravina, quoted in the press release.

This Thursday, the president of the German League Christian Seifert indicated that the Bundesliga, stopped since mid-March, was "ready" to resume on May 9, if the German authorities gave the green light.

UEFA, for its part, has announced that places in European competitions should be allocated to "sporting merit", settling a question which has agitated the national championships since the suspension of matches in mid-March.

Recalling that the health of the players and spectators "remains the primary concern", UEFA did not provide details on the calendar for the resumption of competitions.

One of the scenarios plans to finish the national competitions in early August and to complete throughout August the Champions League, suspended in mid-March at the stage of the round of 16.
