  • Government. Sanidad removed the 'fake' masks five days after learning they were false

The Government bought 2.1 million masks from Garry Galaxy , the supplier of the hundreds of defective masks that flooded hospitals and residences in the main autonomous communities, and which have had to be removed, as they do not protect toilets and expose them to the coronavirus.

This is borne out by the contracting documentation from the General Directorate of the Common Portfolio of Services of the National Health and Pharmacy System, which has been accessed by EL MUNDO.

On March 20, the Ministry of Health awarded the intermediary Hangzhou Ruining a contract to supply 8.8 million masks. The department of Salvador Illa paid this company 31.3 million euros.

This means that each mask cost approximately 3.55 euros, a much higher price than the autonomies pay, which is around 2.5 euros. That is, 42% above the price that the main autonomous communities claim to pay in the Chinese market.

A quarter of the order - 2.1 million masks of the FFP2 type - had the manufacturer Garry Galaxy. Hundreds of thousands of those masks proved useless. For this reason, Healthcare has now ordered its intermediary, Hangzhou Ruining, to replace all Garry Galaxy masks with others from different manufacturers.

An inspection through Aenor

This is a change from what the Minister of Health said on April 17. When this newspaper published that the defective material was going to be removed, the minister assured that he would order new masks from the same manufacturer.

But now the General Directorate of Pharmacy has sent a letter to Hangzhou Ruining, which this newspaper has accessed, in which it reveals that the Ministry of Health is working with Aenor to inspect Garry Galaxy on the ground, in the factories themselves from China.

In justifying the need for the contract, Health argues that one of the most essential needs is to protect the professionals who work in health centers ", since" they are the ones who diagnose, care for, transfer and treat patients from this infection".

However, these masks did not protect them. In fact, dozens of the health professionals who used them are infected.
