While the Italians live confined since March 9, 2020 as part of the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, the Italian Foreign Minister returns to the deconfinement strategy envisaged by the government led by Giuseppe Conte. "With the help of a task force of experts, we will work to reopen the Italian economy", says Luigi Di Maio on France 24. "We will try to open the parts of our economy that can be opened with all the necessary precautions, but our objective will always be to preserve the health of our fellow citizens ", he continues, while the lifting of the containment is scheduled for next May 4 in the Peninsula. "Our goal for a return to normal life must be the vaccine."

Italy, the first country affected by the virus in Europe, has more than 21,600 dead - the heaviest death toll among the member countries of the European Union - and at least 165,155 cases of people infected with the coronavirus.

While several teams of researchers around the world are working on the development of a vaccine against Covid-19, the Italian Foreign Minister announces that he has proposed to the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, to pool efforts. "I have spoken with the Secretary-General of the United Nations to inform him of an Italian proposal: the creation of a great international alliance for the vaccine against the coronavirus. We know that if we want to return to a normal life, we we need a vaccine (..) We need to speed up the discovery of the vaccine, as well as its distribution, and we have to do it under the aegis of the United Nations. Antonio Guterres agrees on this. "

Finally, while European leaders must meet at the summit on Thursday 23 April 2020 and the European Parliament calls on them to adopt a "massive package of recovery and reconstruction measures", to get out of the pandemic and revive the economy, the Italian diplomat stresses: "We expect a lot from the European Union, we hope that it will rise to this historic challenge".
