The double world champion with the Springboks, François Steyn, will leave Montpellier to join the South African franchise of the Cheetahs, it announced on Sunday.

The versatile 32-year-old back, arrived in Montpellier in 2016, signed a "2-year contract with the Toyota Cheetahs, effective July 1, 2020," said franchise director Harold Verster in a statement.

Steyn chose to get involved with training from his native country to be able to work on his farm in Bloemfentein where his new team is based, according to Midi Libre.

In a little more than four years in the MHR, the Springbok, already previously passed by Racing 92, reached a Top 14 final (2018) and won the European Challenge (2016).

Steyn, who collected 67 caps with South Africa, in 2007 became the youngest player to win the World Cup before conquering the Webb Ellis Trophy again in Japan last year.
