The death toll from the emerging corona virus is close to 100,000, about a day after the outbreak began in the world, while the number of infected people exceeded 1.6 million.


The latest data from Johns Hopkins University, which launched a project to track the virus, shows that the number of victims of the epidemic in the world reached 97,200 as of Friday.


Another statistic compiled by "Reuters" agency showed that the number of coronavirus-related deaths reached about 100,000 worldwide, while the number of infected people exceeded 1.6 million.


Italy tops the list of countries most affected by the virus with the number of deaths with 18,279 cases, followed by the United States (16,703) and Spain (15,843).


The first death from the virus was recorded in Wuhan, central China, on January 9. And it took 83 days for the number of deaths to reach 50 thousand cases and then another eight days only to double the number to 100,000.


The number of deaths accelerated at a daily rate of between six percent and ten percent during the past seven days, and about 7,300 global deaths were recorded yesterday.
