Coronavirus: In Ecuador, the dead litter the streets of the city of Guayaquil - 20 Minutes

It is one of the Latin American cities most affected by Covid-19. In Guayaquil, Ecuador, hundreds of dead have been left at home, or abandoned on the streets. Victims of the coronavirus for some, they could not be taken care of by overloaded funeral services, unable to cope with the health crisis that is hitting the country.

The province of Guayas, of which Guayaquil is the capital, today concentrates 67% of the country's 3,700 cases, including at least 191 dead, in this city of 2.7 million inhabitants.

Military intervention to evacuate the bodies

Restrictions, including a 15-hour curfew per day, also slowed down the mortuary service. Faced with the pandemic and concerns about contamination by simple contact, employees simply refused to remove bodies for fear of contagion.

Soldiers and police were therefore forced to intervene to pick up the corpses left to their sad fate, whose odor, due to the putrefaction of decomposing bodies, began to invade the streets of the city.

Up to 3,500 people could die from coronavirus in the province of Guayas alone.
