The confinement of the French population "will be extended" beyond April 15 and President Emmanuel Macron will speak Monday shortly after 8 p.m. to present his decisions concerning the coronavirus pandemic in the coming weeks, the Élysée told AFP.

The services of the presidency did not specify the new duration of the confinement, a subject which the head of state should address on Easter Monday, in his fourth televised speech since March 12, the first in two weeks.

A little earlier, the Director General of Health, Jérôme Salomon had indicated that the pandemic is "still very active" and "the tension is still particularly strong" on the health system.

At least 10,869 deaths have been reported in the country since the start of the pandemic, with 541 more hospital deaths in 24 hours, according to the latest report presented on Wednesday.
