The daily death toll seemed to have dropped. It has started to rise again since Tuesday. On Wednesday April 8, the Spanish Ministry of Health recorded 757 deaths from the Covid-19 in 24 hours. A second consecutive day of increase which brings the balance sheet to 14,555 deaths.

The number of confirmed cases in the country most bereaved by the disease after Italy has also increased to 146,690, while the authorities are gradually increasing the number of detection tests.

In percentage terms, the progression of the number of deaths as that of the cases remained stable on Wednesday, a trend which according to the authorities confirms that the epidemic has stabilized. The patients who were able to leave the hospital are now 48,021, more than a third of the cases confirmed.

"Well below bad days"

The pressure eased a little on the hospitals, which had been overwhelmed by the influx of patients. "There is a decline in this hospital in particular and I believe in all hospitals," said AFP hospital spokesman Severo Ochoa de Leganes, on the outskirts of Madrid.

The Madrid region remains the most affected by the disease, with more than 5,500 deaths, more than a third of the total in the country. "We are at 47 patients in the emergency room […], far below the 80 or 90 that we could bear on bad days before the pandemic," added the spokesman.

The intensive care unit, which has tripled in capacity, continues to work at full capacity, he said.
