SVT has mapped out that 337 patients are admitted to Sweden's intensive care units today. In the whole country, there were 526 so-called IVA sites last year, according to the Swedish Intensive Care Register (SIR). Many hospitals have expanded significantly in recent weeks, and the National Board of Health yesterday stated that it has expanded by about 300 places throughout the country after the covid-19 outbreak.

But according to the Public Health Agency's forecast, between 900 and 1300 IVA sites will be needed when the pandemic reaches its peak with the most sick in Sweden.

Thus, there are still between 100 and 400 intensive care places.

- Up to between 200 and 300 extra places have already been expanded. Without taking the Älvsjö fair into the calculation, there are upwards of 250 more Iva places. But absolutely, if you follow the modulation from the Public Health Authority, it will not be enough, says Taha Alexandersson, Deputy Emergency Response Manager at the National Board of Health and Welfare.

Many hospitals are hurting places

In Norrtälje, the hospital, in the hospital's occupancy system that is updated three times a day, reports that they have an IVA site too little, already today. In Greater Stockholm there are 21 places left and patients can be moved between the hospitals, but it is more difficult in the rest of the country.

Västerbotten reports today that there are only three IVA seats left, and according to the forecast, 45 IVA seats will be needed most. Eleven sites are occupied, five of which are diagnosed with Covid-19 virus.

At the hospital in Hudiksvall, they work to more than double their seats to a total of eleven and set up operations to ensure that the staff is sufficient.

"Whether the staff will be sufficient depends on how much illness there is among them," says Jonny Hillgren, head of operations in anesthesia and intensive care in Huddiksvall.

Number of intensive care places secret

But in most places it is secret how many IVA sites you have. In Dalarna, the Public Health Agency estimates that at most 40 places will be needed.

- I can't go into exactly how many places we have in intensive care, but twelve are there now and we can meet many, many more if needed, says Anders Lindblom, infection control physician in Dalarna to SVT.

Värmland offers beds

In Värmland, they are expected to need as many as 40 IVA sites, but here they are still early on the curve of infection spread, with a corona patient in intensive care. Now they have offered places in their intensive care unit to relieve other regions.

- We have had a very flat curve in Värmland, however, we can see that if we look at other counties, the increase when it has started to go very fast, says Tobias Kjellberg, healthcare manager at Region Värmland.

SVT: - Do you manage 40 care places?

- We have rigged to cope with what FHM has simulated. Then it really does matter how many days you stay in the respirator for what capacity we have. But healthcare is a system and hopefully not all peaks will come simultaneously in Sweden and we may have to use the whole system.
