A six-week-old baby has died of the coronavirus, Connecticut State Governor Ned Lamont reported Wednesday.

"It is with sadness that breaks my heart that we can confirm today the first pediatric fatality in Connecticut linked to covid-19," Lamont said on his Twitter account. "We think that this is one of the youngest people in the world who dies from complications generated by covid-19," he added.

Illinois authorities announced last Saturday the death of a nine-month-old baby in Chicago , the youngest victim in the United States until then.

Supposedly the disease attacks adults and the elderly more than children, although doctors say it does not discriminate.

Lamont said the six-week-old baby from the Hartford area "was unconsciously transferred to a hospital late last week and could not be resuscitated." Tests conducted on Tuesday confirmed that he had covid-19.

Connecticut is a state bordering New York , where almost 2,000 deaths have already been recorded due to the contagious covid-19. Governor Lamont told ABC channel that there are more than 3,500 cases of coronavirus in his state and 85 deaths have been recorded.

The New York region is the most affected by the pandemic in the United States, with more than 100,000 cases in that state and its neighbors New Jersey and Connecticut .

"This is a virus that attacks the most fragile without mercy. This also underscores the importance of staying home and limiting exposure to others," Lamont wrote on Twitter. "Your life and the lives of others can literally depend on it."
