The idea is to provide the best possible security for women victims of domestic violence during confinement. The department of Seine-Saint-Denis, in Île-de-France, announced Monday, March 30, to finance ten hotel rooms. "With this new initiative, which we hope will be rolled out in other territories, we are ensuring the removal of violent spouses when the courts have ordered their eviction from the family home," said Stéphane Troussel, president of the department.

Since the start of confinement in France on March 17, a dozen spousal eviction measures have been ordered by the court in Bobigny, in Seine-Saint-Denis.

"We have to oust the violent man"

"To make a woman more likely to be safe, it is necessary to oust the violent man from the home. It is much more complicated for a woman to go with her children to the hotel," explains the AFP Ernestine Ronai, head of the Seine-Saint-Denis departmental observatory for violence against women.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said Thursday that domestic violence had increased by 36% in the area of the Paris police prefecture, which includes Seine-Saint-Denis. Secretary of State for Gender Equality, Marlène Schiappa, announced on Saturday the installation of "temporary support points" in shopping centers to accommodate victims of domestic violence, whose travel is limited and the taking in charge made complicated by containment.

In France, there is also a platform, let's stopviolences.gouv.fr on which 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, trained police and gendarmes take reports and can trigger interventions in the event of domestic violence.
