Coronavirus in France: nearly 4,300 prize pools launched to fight the epidemic

While the French applaud health workers every evening at 8 p.m. from their windows, many are also putting their hands in their pockets to help fight the pandemic.

Many French people are generous, especially through the Leetchi online platform. Since the start of the containment, the company has identified around 4,300 open pots, most of them intended for hospital staff, but also for people in fragile situations.

This mobilization is unprecedented on the site since the fire at Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral in April 2019. Some 2,500 prize pools were put online for its reconstruction.

With the fight against the coronavirus, several prize pools have already raised tens of thousands of euros. Two of them even exceeded 100,000 euros, one in support of the Bordeaux University Hospital , another for the purchase of masks.

Impossible traditional collections

For charities, confinement makes traditional collections impossible. They therefore need to resort to generosity online or using a telephone line.

For the French Red Cross, 50% of the funds from donations from the general public are today the fruit of street and door-to-door collections. According to Jean-Christophe Combe, its director general, if the confinement extends until the end of April, this could represent a shortfall of 30 million euros for the NGO. The Red Cross therefore activated a telephone number, which has already received around 20,000 calls in five days.
