At present, there are no changes in the terrorist threat to Sweden as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, according to the Security Police. However, it is known that these types of events affect society, for example through economic effects, which in turn can have consequences later.

"This is something that both violent extremists and foreign power can use to create narratives and get their say," says Ahn-Za Hagström, senior analyst at Säpo.

"Vulnerability increases when more people work at home"

Kennet Alexandersson, senior analyst, says that it is classically known that foreign powers, for their own purposes, utilize, among other things, influence operations in a situation that currently exists in society, due to the corona virus.

To point out some specific events, Säpo does not want to do right now.

On the other hand, vulnerability in Sweden is increasing, according to security police chief Klas Friberg.

- Vulnerability increases in pace with all Internet connections when more people work at home. This means that foreign powers have the opportunity to obtain security-sensitive information. I want many authorities and organizations to think about this, because they are using it in the current situation, says Friberg.

This applies not only to Sweden but also to other countries, according to Friberg.

Right-wing terrorist threats increased

Last year, right-wing terrorist acts occurred in, among others, New Zealand, the United States, Norway and Germany, according to Säpo's Yearbook for 2019. The report also says that terrorist threats with right-wing ideology are gaining more and more spread.

The risk that more individuals can be inspired to assassinations or serious violent crimes therefore increases.

- It is a development that is supported by foreign power and which serves to increase polarization in our society. Many individuals are radicalized via the Internet based on racism, xenophobia and other conspiracy theories, says Klas Friberg.
