Government asks NATO for help in addressing shortcomings in the fight against coronavirus

The government has turned to NATO to curb the spread of the coronavirus . This Monday, March 23, the Ministry of Defense asked the organization in writing for help in dealing with the Covid-19 crisis. The ministerial department led by Margarita Robles issued a letter so that the NATO Disaster Response Coordination Center would respond to the Spanish request due to the shortage of medical supplies.

As stated in the instruction, Spain mainly requires face masks, respirators and anti-contagion suits for health and military personnel, fundamentally. The Spanish Armed Forces have asked their international partners to respond, to the best of their abilities, to alleviate the situation in Spain.

In total, the request amounts to 1.5 million surgical masks, 150,000 protective suits and up to 450,000 respirators. Likewise, it claims half a million tests for rapid detection of the disease, 5,000 face shields, 120,000 gloves and 500 ventilators, among other essential health care materials.

NATO's request also contains a request for 1,000 infrared thermometers and 50,000 diagnostic test systems.
