On Sunday, Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad issued a legislative decree granting a general amnesty for the crimes committed before Sunday to tackle the Coronavirus.

Today, the Syrian News Agency (SANA) stated that the decree provides for the replacement of the death penalty with life imprisonment for hard labor, and for life imprisonment with hard labor for 20 years, as well as for life imprisonment for a period of 20 years.

She pointed out that the mitigation provisions stipulated in the decree do not apply in the crimes that result in personal harm unless the victim has forfeited his personal right, pointing out that the amount of compensation awarded under the ruling is not considered.

The decree extended the degree of amnesty for some penalties that were not included in previous decrees with the removal of some conditions, depending on the type and degree of crimes committed, and the decree included exceptions not covered by the amnesty, and specific and clear conditions to benefit from its provisions.

Syrian human rights sources in Damascus said that the presidential decree came to empty the overcrowded prisons as part of the Syrian government's efforts to tackle the Corona virus.

She added that the amnesty decree did not include people who were arrested and imprisoned for dealing in foreign currencies.

Al-Assad had issued a legislative decree regarding the prevention of dealing in non-Syrian pounds as a method of payments.

On September 15, Assad issued a legislative decree granting a general amnesty for crimes committed before that date.
