Between Brasilia and Caracas, nothing is going right. Jair Bolsonaro and Nicolas Maduro have never hidden their differences , but now the break is complete. However, despite the withdrawal of Brazilian diplomatic personnel from Caracas, the two countries should keep a minimum of diplomatic relations.
Weaken Maduro
The Brazilian government says " assess how consular assistance will be provided " since at least 10,000 Brazilians still live in Venezuela.
For Jair Bolsonaro, it is above all a question of weakening Nicolas Maduro a little more, a year after recognizing Juan Guaidó as interim president . The Venezuelan president, who does not hesitate to call his Brazilian counterpart " fascist ", regularly accuses him of plotting with the United States and Colombia to overthrow him.
Armed conflict?
In mid-February , Nicolas Maduro even accused him of " training the Brazilian armed forces towards an armed conflict with Venezuela " after an attack by a group of deserters against a Venezuelan military post near the Brazilian border.
Still, this decision of the Brazilian government isolates Caracas a little more , which resists despite significant international pressure.
