A 25-year-old supervisor committed suicide on the night of Wednesday to Thursday with his service weapon at the Luynes remand center, near Aix-en-Provence, we learned from concordant sources.
During the night of Wednesday to Thursday, the supervisor was alone in the prison watchtower. His lifeless body was discovered Thursday around 5 am, at the time of the relief, said a union source, referring to a man "jovial", arrived in Luynes in 2018 and comes from overseas.
Five suicides in 2019
The Aix-en-Provence prosecutor's office has opened an investigation entrusted to the Aix-en-Provence police station. "The suicide hypothesis is most likely but the autopsy will specify the circumstances of the death," said AFP the Aix-en-Provence attorney Achille Kiriakides.
"It seems that the suicide is linked to personal reasons", for its part indicated the direction of the prison administration.
The watchtower is one of the only places in detention, with the main entrance door, where the guards have direct access to a weapon.
"It is the first suicide in 2020 of a prison officer". In 2019, there were five suicides among supervisors, including one in the workplace. There were seven in 2018, all outside of detention centers. There are a total of 30,000 surveillance personnel.
