The Cargill factory in Haubourdin in the North. - M.Libert / 20 Minutes

On the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, the Cargill factory in Haubourdin, near Lille, was the target of a malicious act, we learned on Friday, from a police source. Tons of glucose were spilled causing a delay in production.

Police said the incident took place at the Cargill site around midnight on Wednesday. Eleven purge valves on macerators containing liquid glucose were deliberately opened by an unknown number of people. Nearly 250 tonnes of this product have been lost, the company estimated. The damage also includes a delay in production and the loss of 118 tonnes of "dry matter".

Plan to cut 183 positions

A police investigation has been launched to try to find the alleged perpetrators of this malicious act. To date, no suspect has been arrested.

Note that this site of the Cargill group is currently affected by a social movement. The factory is also stopped since Tuesday evening at the call of the CGT union to protest against the dismissal of an employee laid off. In addition, an unlimited strike notice had been filed in mid-January, in reaction to the announcement of a plan to cut 183 positions put in place by the company which wishes to abandon the starch extraction activity. . The “job safeguarding plan”, challenged in court, must be closed at the end of March. The first layoffs would take place in July, according to the CGT.
