The risk of being infected with the COVID-19 virus in Europe is still low to moderate, says Minister Bruno Bruins for Medical Care. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) does not change this estimate yet, partly due to the rigorous measures that are being taken in Northern Italy to contain the outbreak. This is apparent from a letter from the minister to the House of Representatives on Tuesday. According to him, the situation remains unpredictable and can change quickly.
At the European level, countries will share more specific information with each other, Bruins reports. A rapid response team from the WHO and ECDC health organization has arrived in Italy to help deal with the outbreak. They will also retrieve information on the basis of which further measures may be taken.
People who have been to one of the countries in recent weeks where a widespread outbreak occurs or have been in contact with a patient with the virus are asked to call the doctor, Bruins writes. The minister reports that hospitals also check faster for the corona virus when patients have pneumonia whose cause is unknown.

Some readers ask why Dutch airports do not check for COVID-19 virus infection, for example on flights coming from affected areas in Italy.
RIVM previously said to NU.nl that it makes no sense to test returning travelers for coronavirus preventively. Only when there are health problems does the virus develop in such a way that the test can prove this and that it is contagious. The first days after an infection there is not enough virus in a body to be able to detect an infection.
People who are really worried can always contact their doctor for questions. "But that is certainly not necessary," says the RIVM.
